After a short review of our activities in 2008 and discussion for 2009, we went to “Weihnacht Markt Frankfurt” and make a round of “glühwein” to motivate our  Softworker for Social Software.

Model of Two dimensional collected Information

The classification here is not yet exact, but we could try to use it, to position the technology of different social software.

Defintions:

A collected Information has two dimensions:

Quantity-dimension – horizontal dimension – shows how many people involve in the collection process of information. For example a wiki is a collection process very strong in horizontal. Many people send information about a theme e.g. about “the hai”. The information come from a collective process, it must not be exactly, some time it could be a humbug

Quality-dimension – vertical dimension – shows how it is intensive and detailed by collection or production of information for a special theme . Here are important chronological details or an intensive reports. For example a publication about “the hai” from a scientist. The information comes from an intensive preprocess and it could be reviewed vor the publication. The author has responsibility of their text, therefore it has more quality. Blog is for example strong in the vertical dimension.

In Social Software, there are two interesting Web 2.0 Applications: Social Bookmarking and Twitter – microbloging-. According to the suggested Model Two dimensional collected Information,  It would try here to classify them in the group of Social-software or better called “Social Software Technology”

Description

Bookmarking
Bookmarking-User shares his collected bookmarks as “bookmark -list” with any one in the internet. The bookmarks are added with his comments and his given tags .
User can connect to other bookmark’s users either as a fan or as a star, so that he could get a width information-field.

Well-know provider are Delicious,  Digg and StumbleUpon.

Twitter- micro blogging -

Twitter User gives his collected information or  his owner idea into the “net”. It look like some one stand at the speaker’s corner in  Hyde Park , London and try to communicate with walker or visitors in the park about his political meaning or some thing else.  Twitter information is could be a hot news but could be also a stupid information “i am hungry and go now to lunch” . It is  different from blogging, which gives a long-term information and more details.

Taxonomy

We could classify Social Bookmarking and twitter – micro blogging – to the family “BLOG”

Bookmarking is a blog-mutation of “BLOG”with “WIKI”. It is also a “BLIKI”.  Their URL-marks are decorated  with long-term comments and tagging.

Twitter is a blog-mutation of “BLOG” with “NEWS” . It produces short-term and compacted information.

Classification in the two dimensioned collected Information

According to above analysis, I would evaluate  them into the diagram for  “Model of Two dimensional collected Information” with following positions

Social Bookmarking

Quality: middle but higher than Wiki,  because its information was filtered and valuated from user.
Quantity: more than  with its networking: tag and fan-community.

Twitter – micro blogging

Quality: higher than BLOG, because its information is updated.  But it should remember, that its information could be wrong or blod.
Quantity: low because it come from one man show. But if this technology are combined with other technology (look at outlook)

Outlook

Social Bookmarking and Twitter are very new and exciting technologies for Social Networking.

Social Bookmarking will more developed in the direction of WIKI, of Dictionary.

Twitter will goe in other direction.  It will be used  in the field  of journalist, of event maker or marketting.  In combination with other application, it could bring very exciting application . For example by the election of President 2009  in USA, a Twitter in cobination with SMS are used to observe polling stations.

Project Management Handbook [PM-Handbook] is a necessary tools to give information about the current stand of project.

Components of “IT-Project Management Handbook” are

- Information about organization, budget

- Information about milestones, dead lines

- Information about reviews, protocols, aprovals

- Requirement list, Plans, Concepts, Programmsources by IT

- Test results, Installation handbook, user handbook

- Risks list
- …

Project Management Handbook is not a “cadaver” of information , it is a living document with the lifecycle of project.

It describes progresses of project.
It help project leader, project member and all people involve in project.
It is a tool to manage the project.

Project Management Handbook is therefore the content of project’s knowledge, project’s know how.

How to setting a PM-Handbook?

Information in PM-Handbook could be written in book, in a paper work. It could be expand from a small book to thousand of pages. By IT-Project a PM-Handbook is of a collections of documents or folders of documents, which is take care from a configuration manager of project. By great or komplex project, one prefers to use a data bank mamangement systems (DBMS) for “PM-Handbook”

Apply Wiki as PM-Handbook

Wiki-System has an DBMS and a Version control in the background. There fore Wiki would be a helpful tool to set up a Project Management Handbook. We call here ITPM Wiki -IT Project Management Wiki-.

An ITPM-Handbook is currently using for students in the course Introduction to IT-Project Management. The course is reading in Winter Semester 2008 / 2009 at Wolfgang Johann Goethe University Frankfurt a.M. , Germany.

In this course, students have to manage projects to set up a Web-Portal for an university. So we have setting a wiki as ITPM-Handbook for the students . They are working over internet, setting up their project management handbooks on ITPM-Wiki. They could could use the wiki as a medium for communication, for documentation and tool to help them by the management.

was presented by DeLFI 2008, Die 6. e-Learning Fachtagung Informatik der Gesellschaft für Informatik,
on September 08 2008 in Lübek.

This is a report about a project used second life as a social software for the exercises hours of the lecture  “Introduction to IT-project-mangement“ of Dr. The Anh Vuong at the J.W. Goethe University Frankfurt in Winter semester 2007 / 2008. It reports about the planing, the process ans realisation of the project. Students participated the project gave their options or critics after a prepared evaluate form. The results are statistic presented and completed with our analysis.

Classification of social software

Social network software is developing for different use, a compare of their application fields is very difficult. I would like here to proposal a weighting – model so called “Two dimensional collected Information model“, which defines how the Information is collected. So mit one could use this definition to classified the software.

Model: Two dimensional collected Information

A collected Information has two dimensions:

We could say:

Website of a company could have high quality content about company’s products, e.g. a handbook, but they could not bring more then what their owner want. The quantity is limit because of company’s capacity and policy.

Blog of a person or of a group brings high quality of information but they could not handle on many themes or many information sources.

Chat is more a communication between of two persons, the information is low in quality because it is limited on the interest of the persons

Forum is a better form of chat, what brings more information in quantity and quality. But it is mixed with some unqualified information.

Wiki brings a lot of information from many persons, but the quality should be average and the information should be reviewed

On the picture, we could indicate the potential of Bliki, it could be reach to an optimal point: high quality information and high quantity

The development of Bliki

In the first version of Bliki came from Marin Fowler in 2003, it is only a blog modus on a wiki. Java-Bliki Sofware is developed since many years

But Bliki is not well-known, even it has developed since 2003, because Bliki development has focused only on the technical realization .

Bliki is an information system, which is a convergent of two technologies, one brings high quality information (blog) and the other quantity of informations with their wiki- authors.
So we should give more intension on the use and on the collect process information with bliki.

Base on this idea, Bliki could be a new tool for knowledge management and for computer added training.

Blog as an online dairy

Modern Blog began in 1994 and the number of the Blogs grows very explosive-like from 41,000 blogs in 2002 to approx. 2 millions blogs in 2003. In 2006 there are approx. 12 Miliion Blogs and more than 57 millions Blog-readers – Souce: Caslon Analytics -

Blogs focus on the daily reports. Blogs are personal diaries or journals. Static web pages have contents which are often not up to date. There are some websites leaving on the net for years without update. Therefore web-pages are edged out from Blogs, because Blogs deliver more topical information than them.

Contrast to Wikis, where information are archived and fortifying, Blogs focus on topical events and on news. Therefore the software technologies applied to wikis is different to blogs.

Analyse the blog-technology under aspect of users

Blog has the following advantages for the user

• Built-in editor to generate the reports fast
• Surface of Blog is presented with attractive designed template. Thereby Cascarding Style Sheet CSS is applied. Blog Template are developed by designers and there are many free template are offered, some examples: wordpress themes archive , free wordpress themes, etc. . Blogs are more attractive for the readers than Wikis. This is an important aspect what a lot of Wikis especially do not respect.
  
• The Webhosting for Blog is especially quantitative more than Wikis. Well-known free Blog providers are Yahoo! 360°, Blogger and WordPress. The Wikis is based on the amount of the author, therefore, it is better to be registered as an author by a famous Wiki as Wikipedia than to have an own Wiki.
  
• However, the contents from Blogger – blog authors- are not written from every one as in Wiki, but from individual or from small redaction team. User-right mamangement of Blogs is therefore severer than those of Wikis.

The disadvantages of Blog:

• The contents in Blog are based simply chronological or sorted by different categories
• Blogs do not have a versioning system. One is able to constantly updated blog content. For the applications in the internal enterprises, Blogs are not favorable because the important information can be lost or agreement could be changed!
  Blog is a tool for advertising or publication for external application in enterprise but not for information archiving , for knowledge management.
  
• Search module in Blog is weaker than in Wiki which has a text search modus.

Therefore, an attempt to develop an system from Wiki and Blog is very important for an optimally information collection and reuse . It is not easy Bliki=Blog+Wiki. One should have to take the advantages of Blog- and Wiki-technology to develop an optimal Information system to win the quality of informations which are delivered by many authors – quantitative contributors – as in term of the Social Networking.

Wiki: a Social Software.
Wikis are content management systems (CMS) with an easy built-in editor with whom the different authors collectively about Interrnet / can offer to Intranet your contributions in a common medium.Hence, Wikis have found her application in the area of the encyclopaedias – WIKIPEDIA - and in the enterprise solution IT as a user manual.

These applications are of service for the human, virtual communication and for interactive, linked up collaboration what is understood by the name “Social Software“. They differ from the classic generation of Internet – we could call Web 1.0 -

Classic webgeneration concentrate upon the following areas:

• Personal self representation
• Homepage as a electronic business card
• Advertisement of the company products – catalogues, price-list, special offers
• orders of goods through Internet

Advantages and disadvantages
Wiki offers generally exciting advantages:

Wiki advantages

• By the co-operation of the users the quantity of the main entrance grows in contributions and spectators.
• The user’s interface is easy to serve to win a wide acceptance
• The versioning of contents is available what allows review or the archiving of the data
• With the help of an Open-Source licensed system like XAMMP one can provide fast a Wiki for his application in the net or use it in his computer.

However, Wiki also has also disadvantages:

Wiki disadvantages

• The design of Wiki is not professionally in comparison to software for Content Mangement a system like Typo 3
• The Printout is scanty.
• The quality of the contributions is not always professional.
• The openness of Wiki leads to unsteady and uncontrollable contents of the Contents what is not always welcome with many applications in the virtual society, e.g., know-how about physical laws.
• The acceptance as professional tools is not taken seriously because of the “popularity” – except with Wikipedia.

Trust is good, however, control is better

A common saying in German “Vertrauen ist gut, aber Kontroll ist besser“- Trust is good, however, control is better- , which would be passed to the openness of wiki by collection of contents from mixed authors. The openness for the co-operation by not elective, voluntary authors is not only advantageous, but also disadvantageous because it brings undesirable contributions with her . Wiki applications are put on the self-control of the authors what cannot avoid, however, vandalism [Spiegel], [WiSah]. However, the Wiki software offers only one easy protective mechanism: either the contributions extinguish or close the users. Therefore some Company-Wikis are developed to the normal product homepage – to the on-line catalogue – back, what is completely against the sense of the Social software.

One should try to find down the middle way between openess the qualtity of contents.

Developments user rights management in wiki will raise the acceptance of the quality of the given data. – Proposal: The Anh Vuong-

An added Plugin of user rights mannagement is on WikiMedia – metawiki -The Free Encyclopedia WIKIPEDIA is powed from WikiMedia- the software for the wikipedia-developed at Johann Wolfgang Goethe’s university of Frankfurt, institute of informatics, graphic data processing department One could define the several rolls of content distributor as constributor, authors, editor or administrators. Each name space of wiki could be assigned to the cont distributor with different access permission. - User RightM downloadable -.

In the other way, I found by testing of open source social software that blog software wordpress has a software achitecture which is similar to the wiki software. So I come up to the idea:

Build up a BLIKI which is a software combination between blog and wiki. One can use the robust and easy user management of wordpress on a mediwiki. -Proposal: The Anh Vuong

This idea is on the way to development. May be some one has motivation to devlop it? You could contact me to involve in our open source project vuong-wikiapp.
